The Virginia Tech and University of Virginia Chess Clubs met in the third installment of their annual rivalry on March 22, 1997. This year, a total of 22 members from both teams played making it the most successful match ever.

In the first round of Game-30, UVa showed its strenght by winning on 3 of the 4 top boards. But Va Tech showed its depth by taking 5 of the bottom 7 boards, and winning the round 6 games to 5. The second round of Game-30 went much worse for the Hokies and ultimately UVa won the long game section by a margin of 12-10 games. The two teams then played round robin Game-5 for a total of 121 which the Hokies easily won 83-38.

This tournament consisted of two parts.

Part 1 was a Game/30

In this two round event the teams paired off by strength. Virginia Tech started off strong winning the first round 6-5. The Univerisity of Virginia team proved too much for us as they took the second round 7-4 to win the first part with a score of 12 - 10.

Part 2 was a Round Robin Game/5

Virginia Tech showed its strength in this section winning by the convincing margin of 83-38. Four of the Virginia Tech players scored at least 10 points led by Michael's 10 1/2 - 1/2.
