The Chess Club of Virginia Tech participates in a number of events during the school year. Most competetive intercollegiate events are limited to students of Virginia Tech while most other events are open to anyone. Here is a partial history of the CCVT's tournament results.

Past Tournaments

Mar. 29, 2008 - VT Spring Open

A tournament hosted by the VTCC in Johnston Student Center and run by TD Mike Hoffpauir. Justin Burgess and Derek O'Dell tied for 1st in the Open. Zach Snively won 1st in the Under 1400 section, and Vikram won first in the Just For Fun section. NM Russell Potter lectured on endgames at the tournament.

Oct. 13-14, 2007 - Inaugural Hokie Memorial

A 2 day tournament hosted by the CCVT. Justin Burgess took 1st in the Open and Derek O'Dell placed 1st in the Under 1600 section. $1500 was raised for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. A big thanks goes to Chuck Ronco for organizing the event. GM Polgar lectured at the event.

Oct. 28, 2006 -2nd Annual VA Collegiate Chess Champioship - VT 2nd Place

A 3-man team of Justin Burgess, Chris Snell, and Derek O'Dell takes 2nd to George Mason's 4-man team and their Captain Andrew Samuelson (VA Open State Champ 2006). VT swept UVa in the final round to win 2nd on tie-breaks. Finishing 3rd UVa and 4th George Washington.

Feb. 19/20, 1999 - ACUI 99 - Virginia Tech wins at home!

JMU's Phill Gagne defeats VT's Brian Salomon in an exciting match for 1st place.   VT players David O'Brien and Paul Burchette followed closely, each with 4 of 5 points.

Nov. 14, 1998 -VA Chess V, at the University of VA.

William & Mary returns much stronger.  Maybe the next match will end VT's sweep?

Apr. 25, 1998 - VA Chess IV - VT tops UVA, W&M

UVA hosted this year's event, which was joined by newcomers William & Mary.

1997 Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championship

Virginia Tech took top U1800 team and split the Class C prize in the 1997 Pan Ams. The team of Jeff Schoenborn, Brian Salomon, Brendan Cleary, and David O'Brien won 3 of 6 matches and finished 16th place overall.

Mar. 22, 1997 - UVA vs. VT III - Split

The University of Virginia Chess Club sent 11 players to Blacksburg for the third installment of our annual rivalry. UVA showed a slight edge in longer games, winning 12-10 in 30 minute chess, while we decisively won in 7 minute chess 83-38.

Feb. 16, 1997 - ACU-I Regional Tournament - First Place

Apr. 1996 - VPI vs Radford - First Place

Mar. 1996 - UVA vs VPI II - Split

Feb. 1996 - ACU-I Regional Tournament - First Place

Spring 1995 - UVA vs VPI - First Place

Spring 1995 - ACU-I Regional Tournament - Second Place
