The Free Internet Chess Server (FICS) is a virtual chess club kept alive by public interest and support. No fees or dues are charged -- ever!

Since FICS is a text-based server, interfaces were created to graphically represent the chessboard and pieces and to allow the use of a mouse. Several interfaces are available for various operating systems, both freeware and shareware.

Operating System Interface
Windows NT/95/98 WinBoard
Windows NT/95/98/3.x ChessBD (also called "SLICS")
Windows NT/95/98 CClient
Macintosh PowerICS (direct link; This will begin downloading)
Macintosh MacICS (direct link to file)
Macintosh Fixation
Unix, X-windows XBoard

My personal favorite is ChessBD/SLICS for Windows. I'll put together a quick intro to it eventually.
